OCPI 3.0

Roaming

OCPI (Open Charge Point Interface) is developed and maintained by the EVRoaming Foundation, a non-profit organization committed to advancing EV charging interoperability. While OCPI 2.1.1 and 2.2.1 continues to power most roaming connections today, OCPI 3.0 represents a significant evolution designed to meet the rapidly changing demands of the maturing EV ecosystem.

OCPI 3.0 is currently released in draft version and introduces a complete architectural overhaul while maintaining backward compatibility with previous versions. This major update brings several groundbreaking features including native support for Plug & Charge (ISO 15118), advanced smart charging capabilities across networks, enhanced security measures, and more flexible pricing models including time-of-use and dynamic pricing structures.

One of the most significant improvements in OCPI 3.0 is its support for complex energy service scenarios, enabling vehicle-to-grid (V2G) transactions and energy trading between networks. The protocol also introduces more granular authorization methods, improved location data models, and standardized approaches to handling regulatory requirements like calibration law compliance across different markets.

While adoption is still in its early stages as charging networks gradually upgrade their systems, OCPI 3.0 sets the foundation for the next phase of EV charging interoperability. For forward-thinking CPOs and eMobility Service Providers looking to offer advanced features like seamless plug-and-charge experiences, flexible energy services, and more sophisticated business models, implementing OCPI 3.0 now provides a competitive advantage while ensuring readiness for the increasingly complex world of EV charging ecosystems.
